Yes Sisters by Angelia L. White

So I finished reading Yes Sisters: Surrounding Yourself with Women who Affirm, Encourage, and Challenge You by Angelia L. White and it wasn't too bad. It wasn't what I expected when I won the book from Goodreads. It turned out to have a lot of religious content that I'm not really into. However reading between all the talk about God and how a good church environment can help you I still learned a lot.

Yes sisters are those women who help you become a better version of yourself or accomplish goals in various ways. Pretty much these are your good gal pals. No two faced chicks allowed. It started out great and rarely mentioned God, but as the book progresses the focus drastically shifts to God and religion. At certain points it was hard to read past all that and try to understand the base message without it relating to a religion or God.

The book also tells a bit of the journey Angelia took to get to where she is today. Through reading about her journey I was able to connect with her and understand where she was coming from and where she desired to go. Angelia is the creator of Hope for Women magazine. I had never heard of the magazine before reading this book and honestly after all the God talk in the book I was worried that's what the magazine would focus on heavily too. I was wrong. The magazine focused on some pretty basic women's issues and concerns. Nothing too crazy and it seems like something most women would enjoy.

Through out the book there were little letters from other Yes Sisters that were encouraging and opened just a little in the worlds of these women. Most of them I had not heard of, but under their names is a brief description of who they are so that if I were interested in learning more about them it wouldn't be too hard.

TL;DR version:

Pretty good book if you can look past the God stuff or enjoy reading about faith and religion. Great message through out the book about finding the right women to surround yourself in your life and how to be a good yes sister as well.

3/5 stars

Reading Challenges

So I love reading challenges. I read a lot anyways, but I love having a goal to work towards as well. I use Goodreads a lot to keep track of my books as well. Great site! If you aren't on it and you're a reader you are really missing out. I'll talk more about Goodreads in another post. (Once I have that post done I'll link it here.)

Back to my main topic. I feel reading challenges are amazing ways to read books I might not have before on my own. Plus it also motivates me to read more. I have a yearly reading goal through Goodreads. It's currently set at 12, but that will change as the year goes on. I will also be doing the 2020 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge. I'm excited to start!
